Basement Reno for Teens and Home Office Adds Extra Living Space in West Manchester Twp.
It’s true that teens love to have their own special space to escape. This family came to us wanting a place where their two teenaged kids could have a place to call their own and hang out with their friends. They also needed an extra room for a home office. As we started the design process, they also requested a full bathroom, mini-bar, TV viewing area and extra storage space. As we started to design the client’s thought it would be a unique idea to add a reading nook under the stairwell so we designed a designated area for reading books. An LED light was added on the sloped ceiling underneath the staircase, providing adequate light for reading. We incorporated four oversized custom Elias Satin White pull-out drawers under the nook for storage, and added Berenson’s Brushed Nickel T-Bar hardware pulls.
The mini bar area included an undermount stainless-steel bar sink and a Kohler Simplice bar faucet, a mini frig and Fabuwood cabinetry in Metro Mist, designed with traditional overlay doors and 5-piece recessed panel drawer fronts. The light gray stain shows off the wood grain in the cabinetry. Berenson Contemporary square pulls and Metro Brushed Nickel knobs were installed. We used River White granite with white and gray veining with small deep burgundy flecks on the countertop with a 4” backsplash. Dimmable under cabinet LED lighting was added under the bar cabinets for accent and task lighting.
We incorporated a full bathroom using DreamLine’s 30x60x76 acrylic shower stall, a Kohler Cimarron, Comfort Height skirted toilet in white, Kohler Alteo shower head and single handle lav faucet and matching Kohler Alteo accessories in brushed nickel. A white Barclay pedestal sink was selected keeping the size of the bathroom in mind. A Panasonic WhisperFit Fan 110 CFM .4 scone with light, energy star rated was installed in the bathroom as well. The bathroom walls were painted with Sherwin William’s March Wind SW 7668, a neutral, true grey color.
For the entire floor we used Mannington’s Parisian Oak in the Champignon color. Featured in a 7.25” X 48” plank format, Parisian Oak’s unassuming white oak visual combines subtle saw marks, realistic wood filled knots, and a refined surface texture with a complimentary painted bevel revealing a beautiful harmonizing floor that will transition any interior space.
We installed Armstrong’s decorative 24x24 suspended ceiling panels with a decorative beveled edge.
Sherwin William’s Silver Strand SW 7057was selected for the main walls. Silver Strand is really a cool color with green and blue undertones with chameleon tendencies in artificial light.
The existing heating system was upgraded with a zone unit and new truck lines to maintain the proper temperature in the new living space.
LED dimmable recessed lights were strategically placed throughout the ceiling area.
A “cat flap” door was installed in an interior storage door to provide the family’s cat with easy access to the basement’s litter box.
