Springdale Home Undergoes Modern Bathroom Remodel in York, PA

We began this master bathroom project with the intentions of it being a tribute to the historic 1930’s home nestled in the Springdale neighborhood of the edge of York City. The goal was to honor and maintain the home’s originality and unique character.

The bathroom was first gutted down to the studs. All the old plaster and lath walls were removed. The plumbing and electrical components were upgraded. Newly smooth plastered walls would now be the backdrop for the stunning 6”x12” Classic Glossy Cararra tile that was installed 42” up the wall throughout the bathroom. A decorative chair rail trim capped the tile wall covering. The upper walls now showcase York Wallcovering’s, Passion Flower Toile in Sky # RT7853 wallpaper.

A walk-in shower is now nested where the old tub/shower once was. A bump-out in the wall was removed, enlarging the shower space. The Classic Glossy Cararra tile continued to the shower walls, in 12x24 tile size. Colorful Sobe Natural Mini Brick Mosaic glass tile in the color ‘Sky’ creates a decorative band at eye level through the shower walls, continuing on the back wall of the niche. This accent tile brings subtle pops of blue into the shower space. The shower finishes consist of KOHLER’s Polished Chrome Artifacts Hydrorail Arch Shower Column, 1.75 GPM single function Handshower, and an 8" single function 2.5 GPM Round Rain Showerhead. A teak wood fold-up bench seat was installed on the back wall of the shower and KOHLER’s Artifacts 18” grab bar was mounted below the niche.

This shower features Low-Iron Shower Glass, low iron glass provides a true color transmission of the tile, as the glass lacks the greenish tint found in standard shower glass. Low Iron glass also transmits up to 92% of visible daylight without color distortion. This maximizes natural light within the bathroom, making the space feel brighter and more open. The smooth surface quality of low iron glass resists hard water spots, soap scum buildup, and mineral deposits, thus making it easier to keep clean.

The vanity is composed of Fabuwood’s Allure; Galaxy, Indigo cabinetry in conjunction with eight Chateau Crystal Cabinet Knobs. The vanity is topped with Luminous Emerstone Quartz. A decorative 4” backsplash was fabricated from the Luminous Quartz to mimic the profile of the vessel sink. The Luminous Emerstone Quartz is also integrated in the shower as the knee wall sill, threshold cap, niche sill. The window sill in the bathroom was also scribed in Luminous quartz. The focal point of the vanity is Barclay’s White Ensal Wall-Hung Basin sink. The quartz countertop was custom scribed so it could mount as a vessel sink. The Barclay Ensal sink closely resembles the bathroom’s original pedestal sink.

Above the vanity, you will find two original recessed niches flanking the vanity mirror. Each niche contains two custom glass shelves. The new glass shelves were templated from the original glass shelving. Illuminating the vanity you will find Shades of Glass, Well Appointed Polished Chrome vanity light with Opal Glass. The original vintage, blue ceramic tile still remains the floor covering in the bathroom. Keeping the vintage tile flooring ties the rest of the blue hues in the bathroom together beautifully. The unique door and window casing was reclaimed during the project, allowing them to keep the authenticity of the trim.

The bathroom would not feel complete without the stunning James R. Moder 14"W 4-Light Smoke Crystal Mini Chandelier, centered in the middle of the room. The crystals on the chandelier pair beautifully with the Chateau crystal knobs on the vanity. A new addition to the bathroom is the WarmlyYours, Bellagio Towel Warmer in Polished Chrome. This hardwired towel warmer is also on a digital timer, guaranteeing a fresh, warm towel on those cold winter mornings.

Interesting Fact: During the demo phase of the bathroom, the original recessed medicine cabinet had a razor blade disposal slot built into it. Back in 1903, Gillette introduced an at-home double blade razor, allowing men to shave at home instead of going to a barber shop. In this era, families would burn their trash and use the ashes to fertilize their gardens. Therefore, the used blades could not be thrown away in the household trash. As medicine cabinets were installed directly into walls, manufacturers starting adding a tiny slot for the razor blades to be disposed into. The blades would cascade down inside the wall, where they would pile up and inevitably remain forever. When we removed the old plaster walls in this bathroom we discovered the collection of old razor blades.
